Job Description

Position Overview
Reporting directly to Information Systems Technologist (IT Manager) and under the direction of the Director of Finance, the Information Systems Technician is responsible for providing technical support for the Town’s information systems and network.
The Information Systems Technician assists with all of the Town’s PC Hardware and software support including maintenance and inventory records. Provides hardware and software installation, maintenance and customer support services for standalone and networked personal computer users; provides customer support services for printers and other computer peripherals. Manages and supports the operation of network services, telephone services, including PBX and voice mail and local area networking equipment. Provides technical assistance to Department Heads and staff on computer related issues and concerns in order to ensure maximum level of system availability and reliability. Maintains and analyzes all system logs including backup. Assists in planning, implementing and maintaining the Town’s data communications and network services.
Specifically, the incumbent will:
• Act as a systems administrator; updating and maintaining the IT inventory system, overseeing the day-to-day operation of computer networks, troubleshooting IT system issues, installing and maintaining software updates, assisting with the installation, design, and configuration of system hardware and software and other related duties.
• Provide help-desk support assisting users via the phone or in person with personal computer, software and multi-user systems problems.
• Provide assistance with the development and implementation of standards and procedures.
• Conduct individual, and group training on new/changed software and hardware
• Perform various telecommunications-related tasks; activating new telephone extensions, performing relocations through programming changes or physical relocation, managing voice mail boxes and trees and troubleshooting malfunctions.
• Be knowledgeable and keep current on the ever-changing world of Information Technology in order that the Town is kept abreast of changes that would have a positive impact on the Town’s operations.

Qualifications
• At a minimum, must possess a 2-3 year Computer Service or related College Diploma, a Certified Systems Engineering Designation or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 6+ months of relevant experience, preferably in a government or institutional setting
• Experience with SQL Server, Hyper-V and/or Active Directory considered an asset. 

• Working knowledge of a variety of software packages commonly used on personal computers including word processing, spreadsheet and file recovery and backup software such as Microsoft       Office 2013, Great Plains, Class and Auto Cad Software and a demonstrated capacity to quickly learn other relevant computer software.
• Working knowledge of personal computer hardware installation and repair and telephone voice mail hardware and software programs including common personal computer programming        techniques and mini computer operations.
• Demonstrated proficiency and understanding of computer systems and telecommunication equipment functions and capabilities.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate and synthesize complex technical information so that it is understandable to a layperson.
• Excellent written, oral communication, organizational, analytical, problem-solving and time management skills.
• Demonstrated ability to be a team player, capable of establishing effective working relationships with employees and the general public.
• Valid “G” license.
