Job Description
JOB SUMMARY:
The Guest Attendant is responsible for laundering personal clothing, linens and certain nursing care items for residents living in both the Retirement Home and Nursing Home. The Guest Attendant supervises and assists in providing the personal care necessary to maintain the physical and psycho/social well-being of the Retirement Home residents, in accordance with established guidelines.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Adheres to all policies and procedures in effect with the Retirement Home.
- Assists with and/or performs various resident care activities and non-professional services that are required to meet the personal needs and comfort requirements of the residents.
- Responsible for presenting medications to the residents.
- Participates in the continuous assessment of the residents’ physical and psycho/social needs by observing, reporting and charting changes in each resident’s condition. Assists and provides care accordingly.
- Ensures that all resident related documentation is accurate and current and adheres to the timeliness of the RHRA Act 2010.
- Respects residents’ dignity and confidentiality at all times, according to facility guidelines.
- Maintains effective communication and good public relations with the residents, their families and the staff of other departments, observing appropriate communication channels.
- May be required to serve or assist with service of meals.
- Recognizes safety hazards and the importance of providing a safe environment by following policies and procedures and reporting hazardous situations as they are discovered.
- Shares responsibility for the care of equipment in the facility by adhering to established maintenance schedules and reporting equipment breakdowns to the Retirement Home Manager.
- Completes housekeeping duties as assigned per shift routine.
- Launders all personal clothing, linens and specific nursing care items for residents living in both the Retirement Home and Nursing Home, adhering to principles of infection control and according to established policies and procedures.
- Distributes laundered personal clothing to Retirement Home residents.
- Responsible for maintaining safe, neat, clean environment for residents and staff.
- Understands the basics of good sanitation and its relationship to infection control
- Willing to do repetitive tasks daily, receiving instructions and carrying them out as given.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITEIS:
May assist and/or participate in committees, programs and meetings as requested.
SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION RECEIVED:
The Guest Attendant reports to the person in charge (RPN) when on duty, but is supervised directly by the Retirement Home Manager and indirectly by the Executive Director of the facility.
Education
Experience Required
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- Mature and empathetic individual
- Ability to work independently
- Willing and able to accept verbal and/or written direction
- At least six months relevant experience working with vulnerable people.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Familiar with regulations pertaining to WHMIS and able to successfully complete the required test.
- A high school diploma or a suitable level of education achieved through community college, university or other accredited institution.
- A current First Aid and CPR Certificate obtained pre-employment or within the first ear of employment and kept current thereafter. A copy of the certificate is to be kept on the employee’s file.
Working knowledge of the regulations and standards in the Retirement Home Regulatory Authority Act as they pertain to duties accomplished by the Guest Attendant.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- A pre-employment TB test.
- Criminal Reference Checks (including Vulnerable Sector Screening)
