Job Description

Position Summary
The Clinical Extern is a temporary position with the aim to provide Nursing students with relevant experience in patient care while working in a collaborative team environment. Clinical Externs are unregulated health care providers and will work as part of an inter-professional team under supervision of regulated health care providers. The Clinical Extern collaborates with the team to provide excellent patient-centred care.

Primary Responsibilities
• Assist patients with activities of daily living such as personal care, toileting, feeding, and recreational activities as noted in the care plan.
• Assist with obtaining vital signs under supervision of a registered care provider
• Patient transport if nurse presence not required
• Assist with non-pharmacological pain reduction support such as distraction
• Provide comfort and support to patients
• Assist with Hourly Rounding (Pain, Positioning, Personal care, Patient Safety)
• Assist with patient support and positioning when registered staff perform procedures such as wound care
• Answer call bells, addressing patient concerns where appropriate and advising nursing staff when nursing assistance is required.
• Engage in additional skills via delegation as approved by unit leadership (and as applicable).
 

Education

Post Secondary Degree

Experience Required

Qualifications
• Current students enrolled in a Level 2, 3 or 4 of the BScN program, or Semester 3 or 4 of the PN clinical program recognized by the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
• Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated time management and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated ability in working with a variety of patient populations within a hospital setting.
• Demonstrated ability to follow Woodstock Hospital policies and procedures to guide their clinical practice.
• Ability to work in a fast paced environment.
• Ability to lift using appropriate techniques and bend, push and pull using body mechanics.
• Reliable individual with excellent attendance record and able to work all shifts.
• Must have and provide proof of full COVID-19 immunization (2 or more doses)
