Position Overview

The Communications Officer will be responsible for promoting the Town’s brand, vision and service excellence. Collaborating with our senior management team, internal departments, and community partners you will develop and implement innovative communications strategies to keep our current and future residents and businesses informed and engaged. This position provides you with an opportunity to make a difference in our community by sharing important information about our town’s programs, events, services and initiatives.

Key Performance Objectives / Responsibilities

• Reviewing, updating and implementing the corporate Communication Strategy to uphold our Town’s brand and service levels
• Collaborating with various stakeholders to create department specific and town-wide communications initiatives, including press releases, FAQs and speaking notes
• Maintaining and updating content on the Town’s external website and staff intranet to ensure clear, accurate, and engaging communications. Supporting public consultations and helping promote corporate initiatives through newsletters, campaigns, and digital/print communications Providing support to the Mayor, Council and senior management in media interviews and public speaking engagements
• Monitoring and engaging with traditional media and social media platforms, sharing information with relevant departments
• Cultivating positive relationships with media partners to facilitate effective interactions
• Ensuring all communications meet accessibility requirements and adhere to relevant regulations and policies
• Provide administrative support to the CAO and Economic Development and Tourism Department.

Based on your educational and experience-based background, the Town may consider either a contract or a paid co-op opportunity. Please include which opportunity you are applying for within your application.

The successful candidate must obtain a satisfactory criminal record check as part of the onboarding process.

The following will outline the qualifications, experience, and compensation packages available for both the 4-month contract or for the co-op opportunity.

4-month Contract 

Qualifications – Education:

• Post-secondary diploma or degree in communications, public relations or a related field

Qualifications – Experience:

• Minimum 2 years’ relevant experience.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking, with demonstrated ability to write, edit, and proofread a variety of materials such as reports, policies, correspondence, and public-facing documentation
• Knowledge with social media and digital marketing tools
• Familiarity with municipal operations and community engagement practices is an asset.
• Understanding of accessibility requirements and best practices, knowledge of Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act is an asset
• Knowledge of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act is an asset

4-month Paid Co-Op Opportunity

Qualifications – Education:

• Enrolled in post-secondary education, working towards a degree or diploma in communications, public relations or a related field

Qualifications – Experience:

• Up to 6 months’ relevant experience.
• Experience with written and verbal communication techniques, including public speaking, with demonstrated ability to write, edit, and proofread a variety of materials such as reports, policies, correspondence, and public-facing documentation considered an asset
• Knowledge with social media and digital marketing tools is considered an asset
• Familiarity with municipal operations and community engagement practices is an asset.
• Understanding of accessibility requirements and best practices, knowledge of Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act is an asset
• Knowledge of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act is an asset

Benefits 4-Month Contact

• We offer a competitive salary range of $37.61-$43.99 per hour, based on 35 hours/week.
• There is the option to work a 4-day work week.
• This position includes option for Defined Contribution Benefit Pension Plan (OMERS), and generous paid time off including vacation and sick time, and so much more!
