Volunteer Job Description

Help us tell our story — and show our community what makes South Gate Centre special.

The Mission

South Gate Centre is a 50+ Active Adult Recreation and Community Centre built around connection, wellness, participation, and community. Our mission is to engage the 50+ community in an open, active, social environment driven by volunteers, while promoting wellness of mind, body and soul.

Every day, something happens at South Gate worth sharing. A new program brings people together. A volunteer goes above and beyond. A member tries something new. A room is filled with laughter. An event brings the community through our doors.

We’re looking for someone who can help us capture those moments and tell the South Gate story in a way that makes people want to be part of it.

The Opportunity

This is a hands-on opportunity for a creative, organized communicator who enjoys turning everyday moments into stories people want to see, read, and share.

As our Communications & Marketing Volunteer, you’ll work alongside the South Gate team to help bring our programs, events, volunteers, members, and community impact to life through social media, newsletters, photography, digital content, and other communications.

South Gate is a busy and evolving organization, and there is no shortage of stories to tell. You’ll have the opportunity to get out from behind the screen, interact with our members and volunteers, attend events and activities, capture authentic moments, and help showcase the energy and personality of our Centre.

You’re doing much more than creating posts. You’re helping people discover what happens inside our walls, strengthening our connection with the community, and helping South Gate Centre tell its story.

Your Impactful Responsibilities

● Digital Marketing: Support email campaigns and digital promotion tied to our fundraising initiatives and other seasonal events.

● Website Analytics: Track and report on website traffic and engagement, and help translate data into simple, actionable takeaways.

● Design & Templates: Create and maintain reusable, on-brand templates for social media posts, along with other graphics for newsletters and web content.

● Photography: Take high-quality photos at events, drives, and volunteer activities — capturing genuine, dignified moments we can reuse across newsletters, the website, and social media.

● Social Media Monitoring: Help monitor our social channels, flag engagement opportunities, and support scheduling and community response.

● Newsletters: Help draft, edit, and schedule regular eblast and membership newsletters.

● Other Tasks as Needed: Our team is small, so you’ll pitch in on other communications and marketing tasks as they come up — a great way to build a broad skill set.

The Logistics

● Time Commitment: 5–10 hours per week, with some flexibility.

● Duration: minimum 3 month commitment with opportunities to continue upon review

● Reporting & Support: You’ll report to our Executive Director and collaborate with our Program & Volunteer Coordinator and/or the Food Services Manager throughout your term.

Why Volunteer with Us?

Beyond gaining real-world, portfolio-ready experience, you’ll have the opportunity to work alongside a passionate team, learn from people who know and love their community, and experience the energy of a busy 50+ Active Adult Centre firsthand. You’ll meet members, connect with volunteers, attend events, capture the moments that make South Gate special, and help share the stories that happen here every day. Most importantly, you’ll have a chance to use your creativity and skills to strengthen community connection and help more people discover everything South Gate Centre has to offer.

Experience Required

What You Bring to the Table

● Academic Background: Currently enrolled in a communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or related program (or equivalent experience).

● Communication Skills: Strong written communication and an eye for clear, engaging copy.

● Digital Savvy: Comfort with social media scheduling tools, basic design tools like Canva, and website/email analytics platforms.

● Self-Starter Spirit: You’re comfortable working independently in a remote, flexible environment.

● Organization: You’re detail-oriented and reliable with deadlines.

● Passion for the Mission: A genuine interest in the nonprofit sector and our work in engaging the 50+ community providing opportunities to promote wellness of mind, body and soul through active and social programs.

● Inclusive Approach: Respectful, inclusive communications, consistent with our commitment to dignity and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
