The Emergency Department Nurse Practitioner (ED NP) is a self-directed advanced practice nurse, who functions in an expanded nursing role in a collaborative practice model. Working in collaboration with emergency physicians, the Nurse Practitioner manages, directs and provides comprehensive care for a select patient population in a collaborative interdisciplinary team environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive patient care using advanced assessment skills and a sound knowledge of clinical therapeutics.
  • Direct, provide and evaluates holistic patient care based on advanced nursing and medical management knowledge and skills.
  • Perform and document comprehensive patient assessments based on thorough history taking and physical examination.
  • Identify and analyze patient's physical and psychological health care problems.
  • Develop plan of care in collaboration with ED Physician and the interdisciplinary team.
  • Identify health education needs of patients and families independently and in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Identify, order and prioritize appropriate diagnostic test and procedures in consultation with physician or in accordance with algorithms within medical directives.
  • Interpret laboratory/radiology and other test results.
  • Prescribe pharmalogical and other therapeutic interventions in consultation with physician or in accordance with algorithms within medical directives.
  • Communicate with and interpret to patients/families and community health care members diagnosis, treatment plan and related implications in accordance with algorithms within medical directives.
  • Accurately document assessment, plan, intervention and evaluation of patient/family responses in the hospital chart/emergency room record/outpatient clinic notes and documents telephone advice given.
  • Liaise with staff regarding patients to communicate pertinent information and facilitate follow-up care and treatment.
  • Direct referrals to appropriate health care professionals or services.
  • Act as a patient/family advocate in areas such as the treatment plan, complex conflict management and patient/family dissatisfaction situations.
  • Manage acute/emergency situations including assessment of patients in the emergency department.
  • Identify and support patient/family in crisis situation and direct to appropriate resources.
  • Provide individual counselling/instruction to facilitate patient/family understanding and management of specific health and lifestyle problems.
  • Assist individuals and families in coping with illness and treatment plan by guiding and supporting while providing an environment that promotes independence.
  • Provide independent consultation for the management of healthcare issues related to identified patients and families who are under the care of another service.
  • Follow Hospital policies and procedures and those applicable to assigned duties;

Education

Masters Degree

Qualifications Required

  • Successful completion of a Masters degree in nursing.
  • Current registration in the Extended Class with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Current member of the Nurse Practitioner's Association of Ontario (NPAO) or Registered Nursing Association of Ontario (RNAO).
  • Mandatory current professional liability protection.
  • Minimum of three year's recent experience in acute or emergency nursing.
  • Current Certification in B.C.L.S. and A.C.L.S.
  • Canadian Nurses Association certification in Emergency Nursing preferred.
  • Five (5) years' experience in Emergency Services preferred,
  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in clinical practice, education, program development and nursing research methodology.
  • Excellent interpersonal and critical decision making and problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to utilize process of planning, implementing and evaluating patient care.
  • Knowledge of community resources to consult for on-going support of patient care.
  • Knowledge of and experience with, the concepts and operations of Patient and Family Centered care.
  • Exercise initiative and good judgement with ability to multi-task.
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) including knowledge regarding the legal requirements associated with documentation/health record.
  • Ability to work self-directed independently as well as collaboratively with physicians and other health care providers.
  • Demonstrated skill in insight, self-awareness and self-management consistent with high emotional intelligence.
