Job Description
We are looking for a skilled CNC Machinist with a strong background in custom job shop machining. This senior-level role involves full setup and operation of CNC lathes to produce tight-tolerance, one-off and short-run parts. The ideal candidate is comfortable taking a job from print to completion, handing off setups to apprentices for production runs, and actively troubleshooting machining challenges.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate a range of CNC lathes to produce high-precision components according to detailed prints and specifications.
- Perform complex single-piece custom machining to tight tolerances (±0.001”) with minimal supervision.
- Set up jobs for production and handoff to apprentices, ensuring accurate, repeatable setups and proper documentation.
- Troubleshoot machining issues including surface finish, dimension control, and tooling performance.
- Interpret engineering drawings, models, and work orders to determine machining operations required.
- Select and install appropriate tooling, make offsets, and perform program edits to achieve precise results.
- Perform first-off inspections and verify dimensions using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and indicators.
- Conduct in-process inspections and maintain quality throughout the job.
- Work safely at all times and ensure all tasks comply with shop safety policies and government regulations.
- Collaborate with supervisors, programmers, and quality assurance to solve technical and quality challenges.
- Keep equipment and work area clean, organized, and in good working condition.

Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5+ years’ experience as a CNC machinist with strong lathe expertise in a job shop or custom machining environment.
- Proven ability to perform complete setups, run first-offs, and machine one-off components to tight tolerances.
- Comfortable working from blueprints and engineering models with limited direction.
- Experienced with tooling selection, insert types, speeds/feeds, and machine controls
- Skilled in using a wide range of precision measuring instruments.
- Able to train or support junior machinists or apprentices by setting up production jobs.
- Dependable attendance, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to quality and safety.
