Reports To: Environmental Services Manager

Position Summary

The Maintenance Technician is responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the long-term care home through preventative maintenance, repairs, and regulatory compliance. This role supports resident safety, comfort, and quality of life by maintaining building systems, equipment, and grounds in accordance with Ontario legislation, including the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021, applicable regulations, and Ministry of Long-Term Care standards.

 

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance & Repairs

  • Perform routine and emergency maintenance and repairs to building systems, including:
    • Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, mechanical, and life safety systems
    • Resident rooms, common areas, kitchens, laundry, and staff areas
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests and work orders.
  • Assist with room set-ups, furniture repairs, and equipment installation.

Preventative Maintenance

  • Carry out scheduled preventative maintenance programs for all equipment and systems.
  • Conduct regular inspections of the building and grounds to identify hazards or deficiencies.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs, inspection records, and work order documentation.

Life Safety & Compliance

  • Support compliance with Ministry of Long-Term Care requirements, fire code, building code, and occupational health and safety regulations.
  • Assist with fire safety systems testing (e.g., fire alarms, emergency lighting, generators).
  • Participate in emergency preparedness activities, including fire drills and emergency response.

Contractor & Vendor Support

  • Assist with coordinating and escorting external contractors and service providers.
  • Monitor contractor work to ensure quality, safety, and adherence to LTC standards.

Health & Safety

  • Follow infection prevention and control (IPAC) practices at all times.
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Report safety hazards, incidents, or concerns immediately.

Other Duties

  • Perform seasonal maintenance such as snow removal, minor landscaping, and grounds upkeep as required.
  • Participate in on-call rotation, evenings, or weekends as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the operation of the home.

Education

GED

Experience Required

Qualifications & Requirements

Education & Certification

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Trade certification or related technical training (e.g., electrical, plumbing, HVAC) considered an asset.
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license (Class G) preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum 2–3 years of maintenance experience, preferably in a healthcare, long-term care, or institutional setting.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance programs and work order systems preferred.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Working knowledge of building systems and general maintenance practices.
  • Familiarity with Ontario Fire Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and LTC regulations is an asset.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with residents, staff, and contractors.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb ladders as required.
  • Comfortable working in a healthcare environment.

Working Conditions

  • Indoor and outdoor work in a long-term care environment.
  • Exposure to noise, cleaning chemicals, and mechanical equipment.
  • May be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, or on-call shifts.
