Reports To

Environmental Services Manager / Housekeeping Supervisor

Position Summary

The Housekeeping Aide is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and comfortable environment for residents, staff, and visitors in accordance with the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, Ministry of Long-Term Care standards, and Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) requirements. This role supports resident health, dignity, and quality of life through effective housekeeping services in resident rooms and common areas.

Key Responsibilities

Cleaning & Sanitation

  • Clean and disinfect resident rooms, washrooms, corridors, dining areas, lounges, offices, and other designated areas
  • Perform daily, weekly, monthly, and terminal cleaning according to established schedules
  • Follow proper IPAC protocols for cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces
  • Safely handle, mix, and use cleaning chemicals in accordance with WHMIS and facility policies
  • Remove garbage, recycling, and soiled materials in a safe and timely manner

Resident-Centered Care

  • Interact with residents in a respectful, courteous, and compassionate manner
  • Maintain resident privacy, dignity, and confidentiality at all times
  • Be responsive to resident needs and report concerns to appropriate staff

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all Ministry of Long-Term Care, Public Health, and facility standards
  • Comply with Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) requirements
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly and consistently
  • Report hazards, spills, equipment malfunctions, and safety concerns promptly

Teamwork & Communication

  • Work collaboratively with nursing, dietary, maintenance, and other support services
  • Attend required training, education sessions, and staff meetings
  • Complete required documentation and cleaning logs accurately

Equipment & Supplies

  • Operate housekeeping equipment safely (e.g., floor machines, carts, vacuums)
  • Maintain cleaning equipment in good working condition
  • Monitor and restock cleaning supplies as required

 

Education

Secondary School Diploma

Experience Required

Qualifications & Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Secondary school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Previous housekeeping experience, preferably in healthcare or long-term care, an asset

Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of infection control and cleaning standards in healthcare settings
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good time-management and organizational skills

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and push equipment for extended periods
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs (or as per facility policy)

Other Requirements

  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Proof of immunizations as required by Public Health and the facility
  • Ability to work shifts, including weekends and holidays, as required

Working Conditions

  • Fast-paced healthcare environment
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals and bodily fluids (with appropriate PPE)
  • Indoor work with frequent interaction with residents and staff
