Department: Support Services / Environmental Services
Reports To: Environmental Services Manager / Support Services Supervisor
Location: Long-Term Care Home (Ontario)

Position Summary

The Laundry Aide is responsible for providing safe, efficient, and hygienic laundry services for residents of the long-term care home. This role supports resident comfort, dignity, and infection prevention by ensuring all linens and personal clothing are properly cleaned, handled, and returned in a timely manner, in accordance with Ontario Long-Term Care legislation, infection prevention standards, and workplace policies.

Key Responsibilities

Laundry Operations

  • Collect, sort, wash, dry, fold, and distribute resident clothing and home linens
  • Label, track, and return resident clothing accurately
  • Operate laundry equipment (washers, dryers, presses) safely and efficiently
  • Use appropriate detergents, chemicals, and disinfectants as per manufacturer and WHMIS guidelines
  • Inspect linens and clothing for damage and report items requiring repair or replacement

Infection Prevention & Safety

  • Follow infection prevention and control (IPAC) practices, including proper handling of soiled laundry
  • Maintain separation of clean and soiled laundry at all times
  • Adhere to Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) standards and home policies
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)

Housekeeping & Organization

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the laundry area
  • Clean and sanitize laundry equipment and workspaces
  • Monitor and report supply needs (detergents, PPE, linen stock)

Resident-Centered Care

  • Respect resident dignity, privacy, and personal belongings
  • Respond courteously to resident and staff inquiries related to laundry services
  • Work collaboratively with nursing, housekeeping, and other departments

Other Duties

  • Assist with linen distribution and inventory as required
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Experience Required

Qualifications & Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Grade 10 education or equivalent preferred
  • Previous experience in laundry services, healthcare, or institutional settings considered an asset

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Basic understanding of infection control principles
  • Strong attention to detail and organization
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull loads up to approximately 20–25 kg
  • Manual dexterity for folding and sorting laundry

Certifications & Compliance (Ontario Requirements)

  • WHMIS training (or willingness to complete upon hire)
  • Infection Prevention and Control training
  • Occupational Health and Safety training
  • Proof of immunization as required by the Long-Term Care Homes Act
  • Vulnerable Sector Check (satisfactory)

Working Conditions

  • Indoor laundry facility environment
  • Exposure to heat, humidity, and cleaning chemicals
  • Shift work may include days, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays
