Volunteer Job Description
The Therapy Dog Coordinator manages, supports and facilitates local St. John Ambulance (SJA) Therapy Dog services and affiliated initiatives.
Location of Unit Coordinator- Woodstock - Oxford County
Position Description:
The Therapy Dog Coordinator is responsible for the overall organization, administration and training of the Therapy Dog Unit. Therapy Dog Coordinators work closely in cooperation and communication with their Regional Therapy Dog Program Advisor and Community Services Coordinator, and as required from time to time the Provincial Therapy Dog Advisor and Executive Director to ensure the smooth, efficient operation of the program.
Responsibilities:
Support and coordinate volunteers and Therapy Dog teams, ensuring members and dogs meet required qualifications, training, and program standards.
Coordinate community visits and services with hospitals, long-term care facilities, and other community organizations.
Provide leadership and guidance to Unit members, including orientation to policies, procedures, training requirements, and Therapy Dog program standards.
Coordinate new member onboarding, including monitoring first visits and supporting Information Seminars, Evaluations, Workshops, and related programming.
Maintain accurate records and reporting, including volunteer hours, visits, membership documentation, veterinary records, and Unit status reports.
Identify community needs and opportunities and help develop relationships and resources that support the Therapy Dog program.
Work collaboratively with St. John Ambulance staff and advisors to address administrative, operational, and service-delivery needs.
Support recruitment and leadership development within the Unit, including identifying and appointing Assistant Coordinators when required.
Coordinate specialized programming
Support public relations and community outreach initiatives in collaboration with St. John Ambulance staff.
Lead Unit meetings and participate in regional/provincial meetings as required.
Provide regular updates and reports to the Community Services Coordinator, Unit leadership, and Council, ensuring all documentation is completed accurately and on time.
Experience Required
Experience in the Therapy Dog Program preferred (or knowledge of our program or similar program)
Willingness to learn about our Therapy Dog Program and St John Ambulance
Computer literate, comfortable with technology
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Solid organizational and problem-solving skills
Able to adapt to a flexible volunteer schedule and willingness to travel throughout Woodstock-Oxford County
Comfortable around dogs
Leadership experience
