The Mission

South Gate Centre is a 50+ Active Adult Recreation and Community Centre built around connection, wellness, participation, and community. Our mission is to engage the 50+ community in an open, active, social environment driven by volunteers, while promoting wellness of mind, body and soul.

Every day, something happens at South Gate worth sharing. A new program brings people together. A volunteer goes above and beyond. A member tries something new. A skill is shared in the woodshop. A room is filled with laughter. An event brings the community through our doors. 

We’re looking for someone who understands those moments and wants to be a part of the South Gate story in a way that makes people want to be part of it through the sharing of knowledge and experience.

The Opportunity

South Gate Centre is looking for a Woodshop Lead Volunteer to help support our Woodshop program and the members who enjoy creating, building and learning together.

This is a hands-on volunteer role for someone who is comfortable in a woodshop environment, enjoys sharing knowledge and takes pride in helping others feel confident using the space.

You don't need to be a teacher by profession. You simply need practical experience, patience, a willingness to help and a genuine interest in seeing our members succeed.

Your Impactful Responsibilities

• Help oversee the Woodshop during designated hours
• Assist members with projects, tools and basic woodworking techniques
• Help ensure equipment and work areas are used safely and responsibly
• Provide guidance and encouragement to members with different levels of experience
• Help maintain an organized, welcoming and functional workspace
• Identify basic equipment or supply needs and communicate them to South Gate staff
• Help foster a positive, respectful and collaborative Woodshop environment

The Logistics

• Time Commitment: 5 - 10 hours per week, with some flexibility.
• Duration: minimum 3 month commitment with opportunities to continue upon review
• Reporting & Support: You’ll report to our Woodshop Coordinator and collaborate with our Program & Volunteer Coordinator throughout your term.

• Practical woodworking experience and comfort working with common shop tools
• A strong awareness of shop safety
• Patience and a willingness to help others learn
• Good communication skills
• Someone dependable, approachable and comfortable working independently
• Previous experience teaching, mentoring or leading others is an asset
• Passion for the Mission: A genuine interest in the nonprofit sector and our work in engaging the 50+ community providing opportunities to promote wellness of mind, body and soul through active and social programs.
