Volunteer Job Description

Volunteer Role Description

Help us find great volunteers and make them feel at home from day one

The Mission

South Gate Centre is a 50+ Active Adult Recreation and Community Centre built around connection, wellness, participation, and community. Our mission is to engage the 50+ community in an open, active, social environment driven by volunteers, while promoting wellness of mind, body and soul.

Every day, something happens at South Gate worth sharing. A new program brings people together. A volunteer goes above and beyond. A member tries something new. A skill is shared in the woodshop. A room is filled with laughter. An event brings the community through our doors.

We’re looking for someone who understands those moments and wants to be a part of the South Gate story in a way that makes people want to be part of it through the sharing of knowledge and experience.

The Opportunity

Volunteers are at the heart of South Gate Centre, and we're looking for a Volunteer Recruitment & Onboarding Assistant to help us grow and support our volunteer community.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys meeting people, making connections and helping others find a place where their skills and interests can make a difference.

Working alongside South Gate staff, you'll help us connect with potential volunteers, learn what they're interested in and help guide them through the first steps of becoming part of the South Gate team.

Your Impactful Responsibilities

  • Help welcome and connect with prospective volunteers
  • Assist with volunteer inquiries and initial conversations
  • Help identify volunteer interests, skills and areas where they would like to contribute
  • Assist with volunteer applications, orientation and onboarding
  • Help ensure new volunteers understand their role and feel comfortable getting started
  • Follow up with new volunteers to see how things are going
  • Help maintain accurate volunteer information and records
  • Assist with volunteer recruitment initiatives, information sessions and outreach
  • Work with South Gate staff to identify current and upcoming volunteer opportunities
  • Help create a welcoming and positive volunteer experience from the very beginning

What We’re Looking For

  • Friendly, approachable and comfortable meeting new people
  • Strong communication and listening skills
  • Organized and dependable
  • Comfortable with basic administrative tasks and record keeping
  • Able to recognize people's strengths and interests
  • Patient, encouraging and welcoming
  • Previous volunteer, recruitment, customer service or administrative experience is an asset
  • Passion for the Mission: A genuine interest in the nonprofit sector and our work in engaging the 50+ community providing opportunities to promote wellness of mind, body and soul through active and social programs.
  • Inclusive Approach: Respectful, inclusive communications, consistent with our commitment to dignity and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Logistics

  • Time Commitment: 2 - 4 hours per week, with some flexibility.
  • Duration: minimum 3 month commitment with opportunities to continue upon review
  • Reporting & Support: You’ll report to our Program & Volunteer Coordinator and collaborate with other staff and volunteers.

Why Volunteer with Us?

At South Gate, volunteering isn't simply about filling a shift. It's about finding the right people, in the right roles, doing something that matters to them.

You can help someone discover a new purpose, share a skill they've had for years or find a community they didn't know they were looking for.
