Volunteer Job Description

Volunteer Role Description

Help our members move with confidence, strength and purpose.

The Mission

South Gate Centre is a 50+ Active Adult Recreation and Community Centre built around connection, wellness, participation, and community. Our mission is to engage the 50+ community in an open, active, social environment driven by volunteers, while promoting wellness of mind, body and soul.

Every day, something happens at South Gate worth sharing. A new program brings people together. A volunteer goes above and beyond. A member tries something new. A skill is shared in the woodshop. A room is filled with laughter. An event brings the community through our doors.

We’re looking for someone who understands those moments and wants to be a part of the South Gate story in a way that makes people want to be part of it through the sharing of knowledge and experience.

The Opportunity

South Gate Centre is looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Group Senior Fitness Instructor to join our growing fitness team and help deliver engaging, safe and effective fitness programming for adults 50+.

We're looking for someone who understands that fitness at South Gate is about more than a workout. It's about helping people maintain strength, mobility, balance, confidence and independence while creating an environment where members feel comfortable and motivated to participate.

We are particularly interested in hearing from male instructors, as we continue to explore ways to engage more men in our fitness programs. All qualified applicants are welcome and encouraged to apply.

Your Impactful Responsibilities

  • Lead safe, engaging and appropriately challenging fitness classes for adults 50+
  • Adapt exercises to accommodate different fitness levels and abilities
  • Provide clear demonstrations and instructions
  • Create an encouraging and inclusive class environment
  • Monitor participants and provide appropriate modifications when needed
  • Encourage proper form, safe movement and confidence
  • Work collaboratively with the South Gate fitness team
  • Communicate effectively with members and South Gate staff
  • Help contribute ideas to the ongoing development of our fitness programming
  • Maintain a professional, welcoming and member-focused approach

What We’re Looking For

  • Current SFIC certification or appropriate recognized fitness-instruction credentials
  • Experience leading group fitness classes, particularly with adults 50+
  • Strong understanding of safe exercise practices and appropriate modifications
  • Confident communication and presentation skills
  • Energetic, encouraging and approachable personality
  • Ability to recognize and respond to different fitness levels and abilities
  • Dependable and comfortable working as part of a team
  • First Aid/CPR certification is an asset
  • Passion for the Mission: A genuine interest in the nonprofit sector and our work in engaging the 50+ community providing opportunities to promote wellness of mind, body and soul through active and social programs.
  • Inclusive Approach: Respectful, inclusive communications, consistent with our commitment to dignity and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Logistics

  • Time Commitment: 1 - 3 hours per week, with some flexibility.
  • Duration: minimum 3 month commitment with opportunities to continue upon review
  • Reporting & Support: You’ll report to our Food Services Manager and collaborate with other staff and volunteers.

Why Volunteer with Us?

Our members come to South Gate for many reasons, but movement is an important part of staying active, independent and connected.

As a fitness instructor, you'll have the opportunity to make a real difference in how our members feel about movement and what they believe they're capable of doing.

You won't just be leading a class. You'll be helping people build strength, confidence and community.

Bring your knowledge. Bring your energy. Help our members keep moving forward.
